Welcome to the new website of the Cheltenham Township Police Association (CTPA). The CTPA’s new website will provide the general public with a forum to become more familiar with the active members of our Police bargaining unit.

The CTPA, formed in 1973, is the sole bargaining unit for all sworn Police Officers employed by the Cheltenham Township Police Department. The CTPA negotiates all matters of a contractual nature and provides legal aid during disciplinary and grievance matters concerning its members.

The Cheltenham Township Police Department

The Township Board of Commissioners created the Cheltenham Township Police Department in February 1903, with an authorized strength of one Police Chief and “not more than seven officers.” Duties included patrolling the small villages, large estates, and open countryside that was Cheltenham Township in those days.

Cheltenham Township, which currently encompasses nine square miles, borders the city of Philadelphia to the north. The township is located in the southeastern portion of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Today, the Cheltenham Township Police Department (CTPD) is the third largest police department in Montgomery County, PA. The Department serves a diverse population of approximately 37,000 residents and responds to an average of 25,000 calls for service each year.

The Department has a current authorized strength of 70 police officers and patrols the Township 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The CTPD maintains a Detective Division to investigate crimes, a Highway Safety Unit to respond to traffic concerns, a Community Policing Unit to respond to community problems, and other specialized units to protect the community and maintain a high quality of life within the Township.

Due to economic conditions, the Department has been forced to reduce both police officers and non-uniformed staff. As a result, the Department has re-focused on its core mission, utilizing relevant technology and cooperation with other local police departments to maintain service levels.

The CTPD is one of only 96 law enforcement agencies within the Commonwealth that has achieved accredited status through the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.
